People have been wondering why I’ve been keeping quiet on this issue, especially since I was right there helping out.A lot of people had information to share and emotions to get out of the way. Also, it was really not my place reply on this - with all the work done by the Estonians, my […]

In case anyone is curious how Hotmail goes about fighting spam, there is a description of it here. I am not involved in Hotmail’s spam fighting but I know many of the guys who work on it. We use some of the same technology in our own filters, including Smartscreen, but we use it differently than Hotmail does. For a less descriptive way of how we do our filtering, you can visit this page. I think one of the biggest differences between the two services is the way that we handle false positives. Hotmail uses a user-feedback-loop to adjust their spam filtering engine (perhaps you’ve received an invite to the Prevent Junk Program) in order to set their filter settings. In Exchange Hosted Services, we review all of our false positive submissions manually and make adjustments that way. I think that gives us an edge (no pun intended… yet) in our service. The ability of humans to interpret the content of email works a little better than machine categorization.

“The notion with CAPTCHA is that computer bots and other programs can’t efficiently process the image, that they can’t deduce the words in the image, and that’s the same thing that spammers are doing today to defeat traditional filters”

It’s been a long time since we had a really good spam attack but finally we are seeing a good-old fashioned spam outbreak.

Ed Falk writes that a new breed of spam bots are relaying mail through ISPs. If so, they’re doing an exceptionally good job. His post is dated May 30, and the day before is when we started seeing the increase in traffic. On May 30, traffic was tracking 24% above the daily average for the past several weeks and yesterday (May 31) it was 34% above average. In fact, yesterday represented our highest traffic totals ever other next to December 20, 2006.

Interestingly, our filters only saw an additional 5% more mail going through to the end user and it performed better yesterday than the day before (ie, it did better on the day that we saw more spam). To me, this implies one of two things:

1. Antispam response times are getting quicker.
2. These spam bots are sending mostly the same spam from different sources.

This takes me back to the good old days of summer 2006 only this time we’re better prepared.

If you experience a hard drive crash, it doesn’t take much to make a bad situation even worse. In the event of a hard drive crash, in most instances, the data is completely recoverable at first. No one likes the thought of losing all of their valuable data, but a hard drive head crash is a definite data destroyer. While a recovery is possible in most cases, sometimes destruction of the platters is so severe that the magnetic material is actually wiped clean. There are cases every so often where the […]
